Project Ideas

Here's some ideas from www.kinderart.com/recycle:

Magazine/Fabric Mosaics

Using magazines, photos or fabric children can create mosaics similar to using glass, clay or stone.

  1. Cut out small pieces of magazines, photos or fabric and separate by colors.
  2. Draw a design on the paper.
  3. Glue pieces of magazines, photos or fabric to the design.

Keychains

  1. Gather beads, buttons, etc.; strings of leather, hemp, etc.; and key rings.
  2. Children choose beads, buttons and other decorations to design their keychain.
  3. Tie the decorated strings to the ring.

Puzzle Trees

Students:

  • Learn about texture in nature
  • Understand and apply media, techniques and processes
  • Use knowledge of structures and functions

You'll need:

  • 9x12 white paper
  • crayons
  • puzzle pieces
  • glue
  1. Students discuss fall scenes and trees
  2. Students are encouraged to use the entire sheet of paper to create a scene
  3. Students draw a fall scene, with a bare tree
  4. Puzzle pieces are glued around the branches for leaves

Puzzle Piece Picture Frame

  1. Gather a picture of each student, poster paper, puzzle pieces, glue, magnetic strips
  2. Cut pieces of poster paper about an inch bigger on all four sides than the picture
  3. Have students glue their picture in the center of the poster paper
  4. Give each student a handful of puzzle pieces
  5. Have them glue their puzzle pieces around their pictures, overlapping as they go until the poster paper is covered.
  6. Glue a magnetic strip on the back

Here are some ideas from Gladys Jimenez, www.scribbleskidsart.com

  1. Paper scraps, magazine pages, junk mail, newspapers, gift wrap, old greeting cards, etc. can be used for collages, paper mache sculptures, paper beads for jewelry, decoupage items that need a new look, masks from paper bags, origami, mosaic art
  2. Fabrics: Use old socks or stocking to make puppets; collages out of fabric; cover boxes; cover a picture frame; etc.
  3. Carboard, shoe boxes, TP or paper towel rolls, etc.: Paint or decoupage boxes; turn TP or paper towel rolls into kaleidoscopes animal figures or make musical instruments.
  4. Glass bottles, from soda bottles to baby food jars: Use glass paint to turn them into vases; use tissue paper with glue on the outside of baby food jars for candle holders; fill them with colorful sand
  5. Yarn, strings, shoe laces: Teach kids to weave by using a cardboard background and yarn to weave a small piece; make a mandala with two sticks and yarn; glue yarn on paper to make a shape; wrap it around bottles or wire for a pretty design; string some beads for jewelry.
  6. Leaves, twigs, dry flowers or petals: Draw a mural with pencil then glue the leaves on the mural to fill in the design; use them to decoupage boxes or collages; create rub-on art by placing a piece of paper on top and rubbing a crayon or pencil over it.
  7. Styrofoam cups or packing materials: Make doll furniture by gluing pieces together, blue paper on the surface then paint them; cover a big piece with fabric to make it a pin board; cut it into shapes and dip them into paint for stamp art
  8. CDs: paint the CD with acrylic or oil paint and do scratch art; make a mobile, wreath or paint and seal for coasters; use them to draw perfect circles; turn them into Christmas ornaments
  9. Wire coat hangers, florist wire or leftover hardware wire: bend the wire into shapes, such as a flower; wrap it around a pebble or piece of wood for the base and use it as a picture holder; make a sculpture; put beads on it and make a key chain or jewelry; wrap an old wire coat hanger with yarn to create a pretty new hanger
